Clarkson University's Bachelor of Science in Engineering & Management is dually accredited by ABET as an engineering degree and by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) as a business degree. Our unique curriculum combines solid business know-how with technical problem-solving skills in engineering and technology.

Our interdisciplinary program, offered jointly by the Reh School of Business and the Coulter School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, trains you to translate the language of engineering and technology into the world of business and industry. Our curriculum stresses experiential learning. Many of our courses integrate open-ended problems with hands-on projects, including our first-year E&M courses, Team-Based Design & Innovation and Technological Entrepreneurship, as well as the culminating senior design experiences. Students begin solving real-world problems on their very first day at Clarkson!

And, our E&M Class of 2023 had a 100 percent placement rate.

What You'll Learn

The Engineering & Management major teaches critical, industry-relevant competencies, including technical problem-solving skills, team building, effective communication, multitasking, critical thinking and cross-functional decision-making.

You'll take 32 credit hours in Engineering & Management, 31 credit hours in mathematics and science, 18 credit hours in engineering science and 18 credit hours in other courses. Three credit hours are in free electives.

Inventing & Innovation

Five Clarkson University undergraduate students discuss their two patent pending inventions. The students invent in a class facilitated by Clarkson Engineering and Management Associate Professor, John Milne, who had been a Master Inventor at IBM. The students show their best prototypes and comment on their inventing experience at Clarkson University.

The engineering and management program consists of 32 credit hours in engineering and management, 31 credit hours in mathematics and science, 18 credit hours in electrical science, and 18 credit hours in other courses. 3 credit hours are in free electives.

All courses are 3 credits unless noted.

Clarkson Common Experience

The following courses are required for all students, irrespective of their program of study. These courses are offered during the fall semester, with FY100 First-Year Seminar being required of only first-year students. Both FY100 and UNIV190 are typically taken during the fall semester of the first year at Clarkson.

Professional Elective

A professional elective in E&M is a 3-credit course (or equivalent) that predominantly covers engineering or engineering management knowledge. Examples of such courses include any sophomore-, junior- or senior-level course in engineering; any junior- or senior-level course in a topical knowledge area(s) in the Guide to the Engineering Management Body of Knowledge, 3rd edition, ASEM, 2013; or courses focused on information technology.

Knowledge Area/University Course Electives

Students will have at least 15 credit hours available to use toward Knowledge Area and/or University Course electives to satisfy the Clarkson Common Experience requirements.

Free Electives

Students will have approximately 3 credit hours available to use toward courses of their choice.

Quality-Based Project Management Minor

Learn to manage people, resources and budgets to ensure that projects are completed on time, on budget and within performance specifications. Additionally prepare for Project Management Institute (PMI)™ certification and to sit for the American Society for Quality’s “Certified Quality Improvement Associate” exam. Explore the quality-based project management minor.

E&M majors benefit from the wide variety of research projects pursued by faculty and graduate students from both the Coulter School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Reh School of Business. Any undergraduate student looking to have a research experience has the opportunity to do so. Students get involved with:

  • Design and management of performance improvement initiatives for product development, manufacturing, construction and service (healthcare) environments.
  • Lean Systems Engineering: Lean product development, Lean for Healthcare, Lean for Sustainability and Lean Manufacturing.
  • Leveraging technology advancements to improve the supply chain of electricity while keeping the resiliency and security of smart grid operations.
  • Extending operations research methodologies to address practical problems in supply chain management, planning and scheduling.
  • Investigating polarization on social media platforms, and analyzing the propagation of misinformation and disinformation on social media networks.
  • Inventing and patenting. Over 100 provisional patent applications have been filed by our student inventors.

The E&M program offers an honors society, a professional student organization and a Student Advisory Council. The Alpha Pi Mu National Honor Society recognizes the top 20 percent of juniors and seniors in the E&M program. The Student Association for Engineering Management regularly hosts business leaders and representatives who engage students in discussions that range from career opportunities to industry trends and issues. I plan on using my Engineering & Management degree to go into some type of construction management or become project manager at an architecture firm. I would love to be able to provide people the place they consider their sanctuary. I would like to eventually develop a solution to the homeless population with the development of short-term 'get on your feet' housing.
